actually two stories in one. In Mid-July '45 the ship left San Francisco
headed for Tinian carrying parts of the A-Bomb that the Enola-Gay
would drop on Japan. Leaving Tinian with a stop-over at Guam she
departed for Leyte. In the early AM hours of July 30th she was sigh-
ted by a Japanese sub which fired 2 torpedoes into her, She sunk wit-
hin 12 Mins. With a crew of 1196 men, 300 went down with the ship
the rest of the men went into the Shark infested water. On blind,dumb
luck a Navy PBY spotted the men in the water and the rescue
